I have owned the DeWalt DW745 for over 3 years now. Before purchasing this saw I did extensive research to determine which portable table saw would be the best for me. To give you a little background I worked myself through college as a salesmen in Sears tool department and as a residential finish/trim carpenter. During the course of my carpentry work I never owned my own table saw and the subcontractor who employed me went through several different portable table saws. The saw I used most during that time was the slightly larger DeWalt DW744. The DW744 is a fantastic saw primarily because of its rack and pinion fence design. I also used a Bosch 4100, which was a great saw but doesn't have a rack and pinion fence and I do not like how bulky the saw is in storage or transportation with the attached wheel based stand. The only other saw that I used during that time was a much smaller and cheaper Skill brand table saw, which I don't even know the model of. That saw was truly a nightmare. The distinction was that it probably cost around 0 while the Bosch and DW744 where in a higher class of "contractor portables" costing around 0.

After graduating from college I quit working as a carpenter, however I was frequently being asked to do side jobs trimming so I needed my own table saw. I also make a great deal of furniture. Because I was no longer working full time as a carpenter I had a more narrow focus in finding "the best saw for me." I had three primary criteria in a saw. First I was on a budget, I was looking for a table saw that was more in the 0 to 0. Second I was also looking for a saw that was relatively light (doing side jobs I didn't want to haul around a bulky/awkward or heavy saw.) Finally the most important thing to me was finding a saw with a good fence design preferably rack and pinion. Mind you I understand that this is not what everyone else is looking for and as such you should get the saw that will fit your own criteria. My needs ruled out the DW744 as well as the Bosch 4100. They are both great saws but cost about twice as much as I wanted spend and they are just a little larger than what I was looking for. In my search this was the only saw that met every single need I had. most other portable table saws fit into the really cheap 0 to 0 range and preform much like the Skill table saw that I mentioned above. The Craftsman Professional (contractor series) seemed to be the only other saw in the size and price range that I was looking for only it lacked the rack and pinion fence. However after working as a salesmen at sears and seeing just how often Craftsman power tools were returned I decided that saw was not the design that I was looking for. The DW745 was really the exact size/cost/design that I was looking for.

The best selling point of this saw is the fence. If you haven't ever used a rack and pinion fence you need to. It is absolutely the very best design that I have used. To cut the cost a little lower, I found a DeWalt certified refurbished dealer and purchased it from them for about 30% less than the new price was. Also when I purchased mine the stand was included so it actually probably saved me closer to 40% considering that you will spend another or so for the stand. And the stand is a great design, folds up so to store very well and holds the saw perfectly. For me this wasn't really a risk because it still had a 3 year warranty and I have had no problem with it in the 3 years that I have had it. After doing many trim jobs with this saw and building a large amount of furniture with it, I can without hesitation say this was one of the best tool purchases that I have ever made. If you have similar needs to the ones that I described you won't regret purchasing this saw. If you need to make cuts larger than 16 inches and you are using the saw everyday you may want to go with the DW744 or Bosch 4100. But if you aren't and you are looking for something that is little smaller, a lot less money and still as high of quality you can't go wrong with this saw.

I bought this saw primarily as a job site saw but it has seen some service in the workshop as well. It is ideally a two man lift not so much because of the weight but because it's awkward to man handle on your own, owing to the large table. I also purchased the additional outfeed and side supports which are great but they also add weight to the saw which have made it even heavier. As i work on my own the additional 30 inches of outfeed support has to be balanced against the extra weight.

The saw sits securely on the stand and has all the power anyone should need in a contractor saw. The rack and pinion fence is excellent and the best on the market in my opinion. I place the fence on the right hand side of the blade so the rip scale is set for me, anyone who sets the fence on the left will have to use their tape measure. The rip scale was out by a 1/16 of an inch and the fence was a 1/32 of an inch out of parallel with the blade. The mitre gauge seems as on all contractor saws to have been a bit of an after thought, there is a 1/16 of an inch of slop between the gauge bar and the gauge slots. This is not a huge issue for me as i rarely use it, when i do use the mitre gauge i push against the side of the mitre slot nearest the blade when making a cut.

There is onboard storage for spare blades and blade spanners, it's a pity Dewalt couldn't have included a cord wrap and onboard storage for the mitre gauge. There is an aluminum shield with a rubber extension which covers the bottom of the blade underneath the saw, this seemed to be holding the sawdust and overheating the motor. I removed it, it might be intended to be left in place if a shop-vac were attached to the dust port. I also removed the blade guard and the riving knife, these imo are workshop acessories.

The threaded bar that is attached to the handle that raises and lowers the blade is exposed, hence the threads get clogged with saw dust. Making it almost impossible to raise and lower the blade, i modified a piece of plastic tubing with a slightly larger diametre than the threaded bar by slitting it down the middle and slipping it over the bar. This has kept the saw dust off.

In conclusion i would'nt advise someone working jobsites on their own to buy this saw, it's just a bit too heavy and awkward. Ideally i'd leave the DW744 in the workshop and buy the DW745 which has the same size motor but with a reduced rip capacity and hence smaller table.

Just a little update on the above, the fence on my saw has a tendancy to drift towards the back of the blade which burns my stock as it clears the blade. This always seems to happen no matter how many times i re-adjust the fence. There are two 10mm bolts under the fence at the back of the table which need to be loosened to adjust the fence for parrallel. I recently went to re-adjust the fence and ended up tightening the bolts when i should have been loosening them, this sometimes happens when the bolt heads are facing down rather than up. I stripped out the threads in the bolt housings which unfortunatly are part of the cast table. I took the saw to the service centre and they gave me three options, thread locking compound, a new table, or a new saw. I choose the tread locking compound as a temporary fix, a new table will cost me 250 Euro. Expensive mistake.

I took the saw to the service centre and they gave me three options, thread locking compound, a new table, or a new saw. I choose the tread locking compound as a temporary fix, a new table will cost me 250 Euro. Expensive mistake.

I bought this saw primarily as a job site saw but it has seen some service in the workshop as well. It is ideally a two man lift not so much because of the weight but because it's awkward to man handle on your own, owing to the large table. I also purchased the additional outfeed and side supports which are great but they also add weight to the saw which have made it even heavier. As i work on my own the additional 30 inches of outfeed support has to be balanced against the extra weight.

The saw sits securely on the stand and has all the power anyone should need in a contractor saw. The rack and pinion fence is excellent and the best on the market in my opinion. I place the fence on the right hand side of the blade so the rip scale is set for me, anyone who sets the fence on the left will have to use their tape measure. The rip scale was out by a 1/16 of an inch and the fence was a 1/32 of an inch out of parallel with the blade. The mitre gauge seems as on all contractor saws to have been a bit of an after thought, there is a 1/16 of an inch of slop between the gauge bar and the gauge slots. This is not a huge issue for me as i rarely use it, when i do use the mitre gauge i push against the side of the mitre slot nearest the blade when making a cut.

There is onboard storage for spare blades and blade spanners, it's a pity Dewalt couldn't have included a cord wrap and onboard storage for the mitre gauge. There is an aluminum shield with a rubber extension which covers the bottom of the blade underneath the saw, this seemed to be holding the sawdust and overheating the motor. I removed it, it might be intended to be left in place if a shop-vac were attached to the dust port. I also removed the blade guard and the riving knife, these imo are workshop acessories.

The threaded bar that is attached to the handle that raises and lowers the blade is exposed, hence the threads get clogged with saw dust. Making it almost impossible to raise and lower the blade, i modified a piece of plastic tubing with a slightly larger diametre than the threaded bar by slitting it down the middle and slipping it over the bar. This has kept the saw dust off.

In conclusion i would'nt advise someone working jobsites on their own to buy this saw, it's just a bit too heavy and awkward. Ideally i'd leave the DW744 in the workshop and buy the DW745 which has the same size motor but with a reduced rip capacity and hence smaller table.

Just a little update on the above, the fence on my saw has a tendancy to drift towards the back of the blade which burns my stock as it clears the blade. This always seems to happen no matter how many times i re-adjust the fence. There are two 10mm bolts under the fence at the back of the table which need to be loosened to adjust the fence for parrallel. I recently went to re-adjust the fence and ended up tightening the bolts when i should have been loosening them, this sometimes happens when the bolt heads are facing down rather than up. I stripped out the threads in the bolt housings which unfortunatly are part of the cast table. I took the saw to the service centre and they gave me three options, thread locking compound, a new table, or a new saw. I needed a table saw to make some replacement kitchen drawer fronts. I didn't really want to spend a lot of money buying a saw to use only a few times - so I figured I would buy one of the many cheap 0 table saws that are available.

Unfortunately, every one of those saws was pure junk - cheap, wavy plastic tables, insufficient (and frequently broken) motor mounts, inaccurate, loose and useless measuring devices. I couldn't bring myself to waste 0 on one of those pieces of garbage.

I went back to my old standby, Dewalt. I own quite a few Dewalt power tools, and while, in my opinion, the quality of their products has slipped a bit in the last few years, they are still far better than a lot of the competitors' tools - you can be assured that it will do what you need, and won't break easily.

I ordered this saw online here at Amazon, using the free shipping (7-10 days, it said) - and to my surprise, the saw arrived at my door the next morning! Sure glad I didn't waste money paying for overnight shipping!

First off, I will admit I am not a carpenter. I'm a DIY'er who has above-average experience building and fixing things. I've built furniture, and can fix just about anything. That said, I was a little taken aback by the manual. It made quite a few references to parts of the saw using technical terms, without really describing what those parts were. It took me about half an hour to figure out how all the guards, fences and so on all fit together. I'm sure a professional contractor who is more familiar with the terms used in the manual could do it much faster.

The saw is SOLID. I mean, rock solid. The table is a very solid, flat, precise slab of aluminum. The bottom of the saw is surrounded by a tubular steel frame, and the remainder is tough yellow plastic. It's not light, at around 70 lbs, but it's certainly not impossible to heft around, and weighs far less than my compound miter saw. It has two well-placed handles right under the table top that make it easy to move around.

The guards are very good - using them correctly, it would be very tough to injure yourself. Unfortunately, for cutting larger pieces, they have to be removed entirely - which is the case for most saws. That said, for ripping boards and so on, they would remain in place and do their job admirably. Removing or installing the guards takes seconds, and does not require tools.

Everything is adjustable and all measurements can be calibrated - everything from the blade angle, rip fence, blade parallax - it's all adjustable. Fortunately, the saw came out of the box perfectly calibrated, so I didn't have to change a thing.

The saw is very loud - but then, most table saws are. I recommend using hearing protection as well as eye protection while using it.

Many people in their reviews bemoan the fact that it cannot accept dado blades. I couldn't care less, I have no need of dados, and the saw works perfectly for what I need it to do.

Overall I'm very glad I spent the extra money to buy this saw, and I expect it to last basically forever, just like most of my Dewalt tools.
